Philip B. Crosby (1926-2001)
Tribute for an APQO Life Member

Philip B. Crosby was a Life Member of APQO at the time of his death. This membership is evidence of his solid support for improving quality in all regions of the world with specific emphasis on the growing economies of the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr. Crosby began his quality career as an assembly line inspector/tester, and in just thirteen years he progressed to corporate vice president for one of the world’s largest organizations at that time. He began his quality consulting career in 1979 to put a practical emphasis on “doing things right the first time” – his adaptation of the worlds by Peter F. Drucker who defined an effective executive as one who does the right things and does them right.

Crosby also applied the cost of quality concept that was originated by Dr. Armand V. Feigenbaum to provide counting rules that allowed organizations to know the financial burden that poor quality imposed on their profitability. Crosby taught his philosophy of quality management and practiced it worldwide. He published thirteen books, all of which were best sellers.

His first business book, Quality Is Free, sold over 2.5 million copies in 15 languages, and it has been credited as stimulating the quality revolution in the United States and Europe in the early 1980s. In the same year that he started his consulting firm and published this book, he was the President of the American Society for Quality. Crosby was subsequently awarded the George Edwards Medal in recognition of his leadership in the quality movement. Just before he passed away, ASQ elected Crosby as an Honorary Member – its highest award.
