Armand V. Feigenbaum Lifetime Achievement Medal

20th Asia Pacific Quality Conference
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, November 23-26, 2014

Congratulations to the 2014 Armand V. Feigenbaum Lifetime Achievement Medal Awardee in recognition of his relentless pursuit of performance improvement and promoting the use of quality methodologies and principles.

Dr. Noriaki Kano
Doctor of Engineering, University of Tokyo
Professor Emeritus Tokyo University of Science

Dr. N. Kano was interested in TQM promotion of Indian industries through the examination process of Indian applicants for Deming Application Prize and he was impressed with the strong enthusiasm of study team/individual from India to Japan around 2000. What he thought as problems of TQM promotion in Indian companies was that they promoted TQM for the sake of Deming Application Prize but not for achieving their business objectives and strategies. When he was requested by TATA Steel Limited (TSL) to help it for its TQM promotion, he accepted the request after MD confirmed this. After several years, TSL broke through and improved its business processes for its objectives and strategies with use of challenging Deming and Deming Grand Prizes as the milestone.
Then, TSL performed remarkable effects including the effects on quality improvement and safety enhancement. In addition, with the cooperation of various quality organizations including Indian Society for Quality(ISQ) and Quality Council of India(QCI), Kano has involved in dissemination and promotion of TQM in Indian industries at voluntary basis.
Dr. N. Kano was very proud to accompany Prof. Kaoru Ishikawa and work for the transfer of QC Circles to Taiwan under Prof. Ishikawa’s supervision in 1970. This became the first oversea transfer of QC Circle outside of Japan. In 1970s and 1980s, he frequently came to Taiwan and conducted the seminar of Total Quality Control.
In 1990s, he worked for UMC, the second biggest semi-conductor company in Taiwan, and Philips Taiwan for their TQM promotion, respectively. Then, from the end of 1990s, he extended his consultation work to Unimicron which was a print circuit board (PCB) maker, a child company of UMC. In the latter part of 2000s, Unimicron reached one of the top leading PCB makers in the world while it was out of top 20 at the end of 1990s.
Twice per every year from 2006 to 2012, Dr. Kano conducted lectures in Chungyuan Christian University for Quality Theory, Quality Management Theory, Quality Assurance and TQM.
